The Connection Between Horse and Rider: Why Rider Biomechanics Matter

Dr. Rachael Arbeit
Doctor of Physical Therapy
Every rider wants to improve communication with their horse. We spend countless hours refining our position, balance, timing, and aids in hopes of creating a smoother, more effective partnership. Yet one of the most influential aspects of riding often receives the least attention: the way the rider's body moves.
How We Ask Matters
Rider biomechanics influence every interaction with the horse. Long before we intentionally apply a rein aid or leg cue, our bodies are already communicating through movement, pressure, balance, and timing. The horse doesn't simply respond to what we ask. It responds to how we ask.
The pelvis, rib cage, spine, and extremities must work together continuously to absorb movement and adapt to each stride. When one region becomes restricted, the body naturally compensates elsewhere. These adaptations may seem subtle, but they can influence the rider's ability to remain balanced, follow the horse's movement, and communicate effectively through the seat.
The Impact of Compensations
For example, a pelvis that struggles to rotate efficiently may alter weight distribution, limit the ability to follow movement, or create unnecessary tension throughout the lower back. Restrictions through the rib cage can influence breathing, trunk rotation, and overall stability in the saddle. Even the way a rider interacts with the ground while walking or standing can influence how they organize their body once they begin riding.
This is why horse and rider biomechanics should never be viewed independently.
Two Interconnected Systems
The horse responds to the rider as an integrated system, not as a collection of individual body parts. Likewise, the rider influences the horse's balance, posture, rhythm, and movement quality through countless subtle interactions that occur throughout every ride.
This doesn't mean every challenge originates with the rider, nor does it mean every issue lies with the horse. Instead, it highlights the importance of viewing the partnership as two interconnected systems that continuously adapt to one another.
A Shift in Perspective
Whether you're a rider, trainer, coach, or rehabilitation professional, developing a deeper understanding of rider movement, rider biomechanics, and horse and rider performance can completely change the way you approach training and performance.
Rather than asking, "How do I correct this?" we can begin asking, "Why is this movement occurring?"
That shift encourages curiosity, improves clinical reasoning, and often reveals opportunities that would otherwise go unnoticed.
Improving performance is rarely about forcing better position. More often, it begins with understanding how movement is organized, how compensations develop, and how both horse and rider continuously influence one another.
When we better understand ourselves, we create new opportunities for the horse to respond differently. The conversation becomes clearer, movement becomes more adaptable, and the partnership has greater potential to evolve.
Continue Learning
If this perspective resonates with you, The Rider's Pelvis: Improving Movement Through Understanding explores these concepts in greater depth. Designed for riders, trainers, coaches, and rehabilitation professionals, this on-demand course examines how the rider's pelvis influences balance, communication, movement quality, and overall performance. Through anatomy, biomechanics, practical application, and guided exercises, you'll develop a deeper understanding of why movement patterns occur and how to begin improving movement both on and off the horse.
Participants also receive a comprehensive course manual and temporary access to the Dr. Rachael Arbeit Membership Community, where questions, discussion, and continued learning are encouraged alongside others exploring the same concepts.
